Pregnancy and Your Hair

Hormone changes during pregnancy can affect your hair, making it either thicker or thinner.
Your hair has a natural life cycle. Each individual hair grows, then rests for 2 or 3 months before being pushed out by a new hair growing tin that follicle. During pregnancy this changes. Many women experience their hair feeling thicker while pregnant due to the hair staying in the growing phase longer meaning less hair falls out than usual. This is due to the increase in the hormone Oestrogen.
Some women experience more of their hair falling out during pregnancy. This can be due to a decrease in in oestogen which may happen from stopping oral contraceptive pill, experiencing a miscarriage or stillbirth or a hormonal imbalance during pregnancy.
As your hormone level gets back to normal  after pregnancy it is common to experience hair loss. This hormone change causes the additional hair from the growth phase to fall out more than normal.  It can take up to 12  month for your hair to get back into its normal cycle.

Remember when you were young and you just thought you mum wanted to torture you with braided hair? Well it turns out your Mum was all over protecting your luscious locks (Thanks Mum). Braiding your hair has some sneaky benefits that you may not have even realized.

Avoiding breakage
Think of a piece of rope, if you unwind it and get a tiny single strand you could probably break its right. But then when it is all woven together you don’t stand a chance. Well your hair is much like that.

Caring while you are sleeping
Tossing and turning at night causes friction on your hair and can unfortunately damage your hair. But when your hair is braided you get lesser friction saving your hair from any damage

Reduces frizz
We could all do with this at times but how you might ask? Well braided hair keeps your hair in place and reduces the amount of little fly always as it is woven into stylish braids. 

Less split ends
Braids help lesser the exposure from environmental elements such as wind and sun in turn reducing the chances of split ends. 

But, braiding does have some come with some cautions as well. We strongly warn against tighter braids which can put too much strain on the hair follicle which may lead to hair loss. Also try to avoid braiding while your hair is wet, this will not only reduce any unwanted damage it will also help the overall health of your hair.

What Is Hair Colour

What is hair colour?
Without going in to chemistry side of it colour is an artificial pigmentation that break into the hair shaft to change the natural or already coloured hair. There are 3 types of hair colour, permanent, semi permanent or temporary.

Permanent does not mean that the artificial color will remain permanently. The natural hair is permanently chemically altered but pigmentations will fade and change over time. If grey coverage is required permanent colouring is the best option. 

Semi Permanent does not break into the hair shaft but rather sits on the outer cuticle. Semi permanent wash out over time, about 4-6weeks. You can also only colour at same level darkness or go darker with semis.

Temporary Colours are those vivid fashion shades of amazing blues, pinks and purples. These colours are just that temporary and will only as vivid for a few weeks.

Shampoo Vs Conditioner honestly there is no simple answer as to which is more important. Both are very important parts of your hair care routine. 

The main difference is that shampoos  contain cleansing agents to cleanse and remover dirt and build up. While conditioners don’t contain any cleansing agents they do contain conditioner agents. Some mild shampoos can include conditioning agents similar to those found in conditioners. 

So why do we need to use both or do we need to use both? 

Shampoo is great and we all need to cleanse our how either regularly or less often. The most important part about shampoo is the how to! ONLY shampoo your scalp, you don't need to create a big bubble sensation all the way to the ends of your hair. In fact shampoo your ends can dry then our and even damage your ends. So still with the scalp only. If you use a lot of styling products or don't wash regularly you may need to shampoo twice - but only the scalp. 

Everyone needs condition and by everyone we mean everyone! Some people even skip the shampoo and go straight to conditioner and use it has a co-wash. This is simply using conditioner as your shampoo, scalp and all massage in and rinse. We have had many clients switch to this method only to find there hair much more conditioned and healthier. Co-washing is not for everyone, for example people with oil scalp will not benefit from it. Also people with fine hair should avoid applying conditioner to there scalp and concentrate on the mid lengths and ends.  

The main thing with both shampoos and conditioner is to make sure you are using a good quality product that is the right type for you hair. What you hair might need now from a shampoo and conditioner may not be what it needs when you need to purchase more, so don't be afraid to ask your hairdresser what exactly your hair now.

Scalp Care!

There are many different type of scalp problem and causes of these problems. The most common we find with our clients are dry scalp and itchy scalp. 

Dry scalp occurs when the skin loses water too quickly. A person with dry skin on the scalp may notice:
  • patches of itchy or scaly skin
  • flaky skin with a rough texture
  • skin that stings or burns
  • peeling skin
  • itchy skin

Itchy scalp is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:
  • Dry scalp
  • Dirt and sweat
  • Reaction to a product such as hair dye
  • Stress or anxiety

You can manage both dry scalp and itchy scalp at home. 
  • Cut down on shampooing and co wash with conditioner to keep the scalp hydrated
  • Avoid products with strong perfumes 
  • Brush your scalp well before washing or co washing. This will loosen an dry skin that could cause irritation 
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Wash hair in cool or warm water rather than hot
  • Do regular scalp detox treatments by simply mixing a tablespoon of coarse raw sugar with conditioner and give your scalp a good exfoliate.

STYLES YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE

Have you ever had a hair cut that you have felt just didn't feel flattering. It may of been a style that just didn't suit your face shape. While there is certain styles that compliment your face shape there is also certain styles to avoid as well.

For Round Face Shapes:
Having fullness on the sides of your hairstyle, along with round hairstyles and cuts that end right at or above the chin line are some of the biggest mistakes those with round faces make. These tend to make round faces rounder.

For Oval Face Shapes:
Oval face shapes are said to be the ideal face shape and most styles can work with this shape. However keep in mind when experimenting that even though a style may suit your face shape it may not suit your hair type.

For Heart Face Shapes:
Fringes are the main concern. That's not to say you can't wear a fringe, you just need to ensure it s cut correctly. Heavy, short fringes that are too wide make the top the face look even wider. Steep concave bob with sharp point at the chin bring out the narrowness at the chine in an unflattering way.

For Square Face Shapes:
When you have a square face shape, getting blunt styles with heavy edges can be a mistake. Avoid heavy choppy layer, feathered layer will create softness.

Too much styling product!

You know when a small dab turns into a blob. Well that is what we are talking about and ways to rectify your style without having to re-wash.

If you over use hairspray
Helmet head from over hair spraying is not a look we tend to go for but don't fear it can fixed super quick. Wait until the spray has dried then with a detangle brush gently brush to try and break the bond. If you are still in a spot of bother a light mist with a moisture spray may help to.

If you use to much oil or serum
To fix this greasy mess firstly wash your hand to remove excess from you hand. Then leave it up to the ever faithful dry shampoo. Yes that is right the wonder product we all couldn't live without. If you don't happen to have any handy adding a quick blast of heat from a dryer or a quick past of the iron should have you less greasy on your way. 

If you over use dry shampoo
Although it is a lifesaver at time, it can be overused leaving your hair looking dusty and dull. To dull the dull and remove that dusty look you can simply run your damp hands over if it still needs a little more a light spritz of water will do the trick.

The sun is bleach your hair, But you should be protecting it!

When we lighten your hair we do this under very controlled measures as we want to ensure the health of your hair isn't compromised. But, when we talk about the sun lightening your hair it is a total different ball game. 

There is absolutely no control from the sun! A lighter hair colour as a result of time spent in the sun equals a permanently weakened hair shaft. Hello split ends, dryness and a whole lot of irreversible damage. Now you might remember back in the 80's and 90's there was these 'wonder' products that you used in conjunction with the sun to lighten your hair! We 100% DO NOT recommend anything like this. These type of product are going to compromise your hair and cause damage. 

It is actually rather scary that a quick google search has a lot of 'recipes' to accelerate the lightening process from the sun! While the sun lightened look is a hot trend to strongly advise you to look at having it done professionally.

You can avoid this potential damage from the sun by simply wearing a hat or using the correct products. So what are the correct products? There are many out and depending on you hair type will depend on what is going to work best for you! They came in many different forms from creams to serums.

While hair ties are great and super handy for those 'Mum Bun' days. Using them incorrectly can cause damage without you even knowing. We have come up with a list of the most common causes of damage from hair ties.

Too Tight
Who doesn't love a slicked back pony tail? Your scalp and follicle aren't the biggest fan of them. The tight pressure can cause damage and even pull hair out from the roots. So be mind full next time you are wanting to rock that fierce sleek pony tail.

Sleeping With Hair Tied Up
Some of us wear it up to keep it out of way other to create a tussled look for the next day. Whatever you reason, please stop! Tossing and turning during the night and causing friction which will lead to damage and breakage. Try opting for a loose plait or braid. 

Everyday Style
If its a standard pony tail or your Mum bun if it is something you are doing on a regular basis then you want to look at mixing your styles up. You see rocking the same style you tend to put it in the same spot every time, the repeated position in the same area will weaken that section of hair and leading to damage. 

Ties With Metal
You wouldn't except that tiny bit of metal to cause and dramas would you, well this are probably the main cause. So if you have some maybe look at replace with a snag free option. There are heaps on the market now our favorites are the spiral type (like an old school telephone cord).

Essentially your hair needs both protein and moisture. The trick is finding that perfect balance.

Moisture is essential for healthy hair. Without it, the hair is dry and crunchy leading to damage. Different textured hair types need different amounts of hydration. For example curly hair needs the MOST moisture. Typically hair that needs moisture will show these characteristics.
  • Hair is dry
  • Hair is brittle
  • Hair is rough
  • Excessive shedding
  • Hair feels weak
  • Experience lots of tangling
  • Lacking Shine
  • Feels dry even after washing
  • Difficult to manage
  • Prone to split ends

Hair is largely made of a protein called Keratin. If you think of you hair as building and Keratin the bricks. Over times with heat styling, chemical treatments and environmental factors, Keratins can become worn and create gaps in the hair leading to damage and breakage. If your hair is lacking in proteins

What are hair extensions made of?

How long do Hair Extension last for?
This depends on the care you take for your extensions. With that said with taking good care of them and getting maintenance done when required your extensions should last about 12 months.

What types of extensions are there?
Clip-ins – Clip-ins are the super easy for you in install, without a long-term commitment. The great benefit of clip-ins is that you can apply them on your own in just a few minutes. you do not have to wear them all the time and can just clip in extra volume for creating a voluminous ponytail or a messy bun.

Micro Bead – They are made out of single strands of hair extensions using a bead 
called micro ring simply attaches the tip of the extensions into the clients natural hair, then micro bead gets clamped and secured into the hair. Micro Bead extensions need to be moved up every 8-12 weeks

Nano Bead – Nano Beads are quickly becoming the most popular hair extension methods The nano bead is 90% smaller than the Micro Bead hair extension bead, eliminating painful pillow time & sore red pressure bumps from having too much weight on each strand of hair. We recommend Nano Bead Extensions be moved up every 8-10 weeks.

Tape –  Tape extensions are hailed as the quick and easiest way to increase length, volume and add pops of colour to most hair types. Tape extensions have a very natural appearance are well as being super gentle on your natural hair. Tape extensions need to be moved up every 8-10 weeks.

Keratin – Keratin hair extensions are long-lasting hair extensions that are attached to your existing hair. Heat is applied to of the extensions and wrapped around the hair.

Weft – A permanent alternative to clip-ins, attached with micro beads, suitable for thicker hair. Needs to be moved up approximately every 6-8 weeks.

What is Keratin?

Keratin is one of the main structural components of our hair, our hair is made up of 80% keratin. The keratin protein is responsible for strength, durability, flexibility, functionality. You can have a loss of keratin  from many chemical treatments and heat services including hair colouring, flat ironing. This causes our hair to have a dull appearance and  be dry and fragile . There are a wide variety of products that help to replace the loss of keratin in your hair, these include Keratin treatments, shampoos and conditioners and serums.

There and pros and cons to Keratin treatments:

Pro:
Keratin treatment is known to provide a temporary luster, and smoothness to the hair which typically fades out after a few months. Unlike the straightening/rebonding process, the volume of the hair is not extensively reduced, although people with extremely curly hair or wavy hair may experience a slight loss in curls and have straighter hair afterwards. However, these results vary from person to person.
Keratin products are advertised as able to fill the porous hair strand with protein, thus restoring its strength, structure, and shine. 
The results observed from using Keratin serums, shampoos, and conditioners are significantly milder than salon treatments, however, most of these products are comparatively safer and less damaging to hair than certain treatments.

Con:
When having a keratin treatment, One of the most common components is a chemical known as formaldehyde that is either present on its own, or released by the reaction of other elements present in such products. Formaldehyde is a well-recognized carcinogen, with a high risk of blood cancers such as leukemia and other cancers of the nasal cavity.  All chemical treatments in  Australia have  no added formaldehyde .  
All supplements and treatments that are used to replace keratin in your hair need to be analyzed before use.  If you have any concerns before using these products contact your hair professional.

Water can have various effects on the hair. From what type of water is used to wash it to the temperature it is set at. Water is essential for hair health, it helps your hair to remain healthy and lets our hair follicles produce stronger cells. The first step to healthy hair is making sure you drink plenty of water. When you wash your hair the best temperature is cold water .  Cold water causes the follicles to close up keeping your hair smooth and sleek.  If you were to use hot water it does the opposite to your hair causing it to be brittle and  frizzy.

Did you know that your hair can absorb about 30%-50% of its weight in water? And this doesn’t even have to be in a shower/swimming. It can absorb water from the air, which is why on humid days your hair can be unmanageable: its continually absorbing water that affects its structure!

Another factor of water changing your hair is if your house water is chlorinated, mineralized or fluoridated, This is called Hard water The term "hard water" is used to describe water that has a high mineral content, usually calcium and magnesium but may also include bicarbonates and sulfates. 
If you have copper piping in your house or use bore water these too are also classed as hard water.
Here are a few tips to help combat hard water usage and keep your hair healthy!
  • Install a water softener shower head. Soft water is essentially the opposite of hard water.  While it contains some minerals, the concentration is nowhere near as high as hard water.
  • Use a clarifying shampoo. Starting at the scalp first. A clarifying shampoo can help to revive hair damaged by hard water, ideally use one that is sulphate free.
  • Apply a hair mask with low PH at least two times per week. It will restore moisture and shine into your hair

Let's have a chat about how heat can influence your hair.

Unfortunately, both natural and artificial heat can have negative impacts on your hair.

This includes things like hot water, the sun, heaters in your home and car, straighteners, curling irons, hairdryers, rollers etc.

All these different influences can dry out your hair causing damage.
It can cause frizz, dry hair, split ends, colour fading in natural and artificial, minor hair breakage.

You can try different things to help your hair from being affected by heat.

Here are 4 easy tips to follow to avoid heat-stressed locks;

→ It is recommended when washing your hair to have the water cold.
If this is not possible then as cold as you can tolerate, even lukewarm.

→ When in the sun, using a leave-in conditioner that has UV protection and or wearing a hat can reduce heat stress.

→ If you are using electrical heat then try to keep usage to a minimum and use a thermal protection spray beforehand.

→ When using a straightener or curler, hotter is not always better.
If you have temperature control, set it to 160-185 degrees.

These tips can help reduce stress on your hair and keep it looking as healthy as possible in the future.

WHEN IS YOUR HAIR SERVICES COSTING YOU YOUR HAIR

Our hair can go through a variety of different changes when we decide to have a chemical treatment.  The different treatments can include;
  • colouring,
  • highlights,
  • permanent straightening,
  • perming,
  • keratin smoothing, just to name a few.

When we choose to have these treatments it changes the structure of the hair.  And how it changes will vary from head to head, and treatment to treatment.  Today we want to talk about the changes that cause us grief on a day to day basis.

Some common symptoms of chemically treated hair;
  • Dry hair
  • Dry, flakey scalp
  • Frizzy hair
  • Split ends
  • Breakage
  • Burning sensation on scalp

Now don’t get me wrong there are many positives with these treatments and we’ll discuss these another day.

Most commonly, all of the mentioned symptoms are a result of the hair being over processed.  Now this doesn’t necessarily mean in one visit to the salon or the supermarket (whichever floats your boat), although it can be in severe cases. Over processed simply means that you have applied strong or too many chemical treatments than your hair shaft or scalp can handle, and again the capacity in which the hair and scalp will handle will vary between individuals.  However, keep in mind chemical treatments may not be the sole cause of those symptoms.

Hormones and medications can cause our hair  and scalp to change, in addition to different types of water like bore water and chlorine, as well the use of copper piping in your house, all of these can cause a buildup of excess minerals on your hair.
Some of these issues are unavoidable but it can help if you are aware of these things, chat to your hairdresser about them so that they can recommend different suitable treatments and ways to help manage your hair.

It is important to remember before applying any chemical treatments what you have had done to your hair previously, because depending on the length of your hair you may have some old underlying chemical treatments still in your hair which ultimately results in the over processing of your hair.  In the coming weeks we’ll discuss hair lengths and what to consider.

3 STEPS TO PREVENT DRY, FRIZZY, KNOTTY HAIR OUTDOORS

Are you struggling with dry, frizzy, knotted hair?

It could be due to wind… so let's discuss the how this happens and how you can fix and prevent damage from the wind.

Wind can cause a variety of issues to your hair, you can’t completely stop the effects of this happening but you can try different tips to help manage these issues.

Friction is the main issue with the wind causing the hair to become tangled which will then cause breakage, this breakage in your hair is a result of split ends from the hair strands rubbing against one another.

Unfortunately it's annoying but there are a few things that you could try to help you with these issues though.

The first step is to prevent the friction in the first place by protecting your hair from the wind by one or all of the following;
  • Tie hair up or plait it,
  • Wear a hat,
  • Apply a moisturiser, cream or oil, as a lubricant.

You could also carry a brush with you if possible to brush your hair after you have been in the wind, remember to start at the bottom and work your way up in small strokes, you don't want to be ripping the knots out causing more damage.

Furthermore, if you are experiencing dryness and split ends, it is important to keep the hair moisturiser with a daily moisturiser and regular treatments, then find a good hairdresser. A good hairdresser will be able to progressively remove your split ends without you having to loose your precious length.

Hopefully these tips and tricks will help you in the future when you're battling the wind .

THE INS AND OUTS OF RED HAIR COLOUR

Whilst red hair can be super fun, it can be just as costly in maintenance as being blonde, but here we're going to cover all the ways to get the most out of your red hair adventures!

The number one rule with red hair colour or any colour for that matter....
HEAT REMOVES COLOUR!!
Yes hot water, hair dryer, straightener or other heated appliances, and the sun, will all be responsible for your colour fading, some more than others.

For longevity in your colour avoid heat at all costs, so wash with cool water, let it air dry and wear a hat in the sun.

Secondly, if you've ever had a fashion colour and understand that the colours can run, be mindful to use a dark towel for your hair, and a dark pillow case if you must go to bed with wet/damp hair (should be avoided for scalp health), and depending on the colour product you have use, avoid getting caught in the rain.

The next problem with colour fade is the products you use.  If you are truly committed to your colour adventure the ditch the shampoo!

Yes throw out your shampoo!

The main ingredients in shampoo's are usually water, salt, detergent and silicone.  Salt is drying your hair out, reducing the hair's ability to retain colour and moisture.
Detergents being the cleaning agent is stripping the colour from your hair and also reducing the hair's ability to retain colour and moisture.
And silicones are responsible for making your hair feel amazing with every wash, but it is not easily removed and then builds up on the hair shaft coating it and preventing future colour from attaching to your hair as it should (not going to get super scientific for you, just going to keep it basic).

There are a huge range of cleansing conditioners commonly referred to as co-wash, that are ideal substitutes for shampoos, or if you really can't break away from a shampoo as a part of your routine, the you could look at some baby shampoos as they are incredibly gentle for both hair and scalp.

Finally, maintenance.

If you can follow everything mentioned above you should see a significant change in your colour longevity, however, if you hair is not in the best condition it is likely you will still be experiencing some fade.  If this is the case for you there are two more suggestions for you;
• Pigmented Conditioners (warning, can be messy), and
• In salon colour refresher.

Your sleeping habits could be destroying your hair and scalp health!!

We all hear about the damage that chemicals and heat can do to your hair, but did you know that the next contributor to hair and scalp damage happens while you sleep.


I know you're thinking there is no way! But if you're suffering from any of the following, then chances are it's from sleeping:

• Frizzy hair
• Knotty hair
• Dry hair
• Split ends
• Itchy scalp
• Flakey scalp
• Smelly scalp
• Clumps of dandruff


So how could this be you ask?

Lets start from the beginning... Your pillow.

You pillow can be causing your hair to be dry and frizzy, being fabric it absorbs the natural oils from your hair as well as any moisturisers you put in, so it is important to replenish the moisture daily, and dry hair usually presents itself as frizzy.

Frizz, knots and split ends, amongst other things are a result of friction, ie, your hair rubbing on your pillow. The constant friction between your hair and your pillow creates a rough surface on your hair shaft (cuticle layer), this rough surface get caught on another resulting in knots, and with enough friction the hair shaft then begins to split. This is more commonly seen in finer hair but absolutely possible in all hair types.

Plaiting or putting your hair up and using a silk pillow case will go a long way to minimising friction.

Now for the easiest fix to the most embarrassing problems, itchy, flakey, smelly scalp and clumps of dandruff...

The most common cause of these scalp issues is a fungus overgrowth, (you can read more about it here) and yeast grows in dark, damp, warm spaces, to prevent this from happening is to stop going to bed with wet hair.

Yes there may be other underlying causes, but this is the most common that we encounter.

Think about it for a moment... you go to bed with wet or damp hair for 8ish hours (depends on how long you sleep), this is an ideal space and time for bacteria to start growing and before you know it you wake up itchy or worse your hair is still damp near the scalp, the itching continues, the flakiness starts and the best you can do is tie your hair up hoping no one notices, but your hair is still damp, you scalp has no fresh air to breathe and so it continues!

So for best hair and scalp results try the following;
• Moisturise daily,
• Do you hair up and use a silk pillow case, and
• Make sure your hair is completely dry before going to bed.

MENOPAUSE AND HAIR LOSS

The onset of menopause can often lead to hair loss and has long been a part of aging that many women fear the most. These days many more women are also experiencing thinning and bald spots as they mature, and both men and women are reaching out for new solutions. Even though there is no real ‘cure', there are many things that can be done to help. Some products claim to help revive weakened hair roots and promote healthy hair growth.
 
Both hormones and genes are to blame for menopause causing acute hair loss, as is the aging process. Confirming the causes of your loss with a competent and experienced dermatologist is the first step in determining your best treatment options. 

It’s possible to have temporary loss of hair caused by physical stress, emotional stress, thyroid abnormalities, medications and hormonal changes (such as androgens and estrogens during menopause) normally associated with females. Tension on the hair by prolonged use of hair weaving or corn rows can also cause permanent loss.  

There are autoimmune disorders such as Alopecia Areata that cause patchy loss of hair often in small circular areas in different areas of the scalp. Alopecia Totalis is a total loss of hair on the scalp and is considered an advanced form of Areata. Alopecia Universalis is total hair loss of the entire body. People with diseases such as diabetes and lupus have also reported losing hair as a result. 

It’s normal to shed some hair each day as about 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time during a normal phase that lasts for 2 to 6 years at one time. Some women notice they are losing hair about 3 months after delivering a child. This is related to a hormone loss and is usually temporary.  

Several medicines have been known to cause hair loss such as blood thinners (anticoagulants), medicines used for gout and in chemotherapy to treat cancer. Also, the use of vitamin A, birth control pills and antidepressants has been known to cause hair loss. 

For women, missed periods and hair loss can be connected.  Lack of ovulation in a skipped period causes the adrenal cortex to secrete androstenedione (a steroid hormone).  This hormone is associated with some male characteristics such as male pattern baldness.  However, if you raise your progesterone level with natural progesterone cream, your androstenedione level gradually declines and your hair will grow back normally.  This could take months before you see a difference, so be patient. 

Male pattern baldness is usually inherited from your genes. An over abundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is an active form of testosterone, within the hair follicle can create this type of hair loss. Current medications are aimed at slowing this common type of baldness including Minoxidil which is commonly called Rogaine and is available without a prescription.

Another medicine, Finasteride, and called Propecia, is available in pill form without prescription but is meant only for men. It can take up to 6 months in order to tell if these medications are helping.

HAIR LOSS AFTER PREGNANCY

​Hair loss after pregnancy is quite common, but can be very disconcerting, especially to a first time mother.  This ranks high on the “what they don’t tell you about pregnancy and childbirth” list that all mothers find out about after the fact!  The condition is medically named telogen effluvium and occurs because of hormone fluctuation following childbirth.  During pregnancy some hair is pushed from its resting phase into a growing phase, and after childbirth this hair then falls out causing extreme hair loss after pregnancy in some cases.

Even though it is common, hair loss after pregnancy is very frustrating.  Generally occurring between 6-12 weeks following birth, hair can come out in clumps.  Following a shower was the worst time for me.  Having extremely thick hair did not help my battle with hair loss after pregnancy, and I was pulling my hair out in handfuls all day every day for about 2 months.  In some cases the hair loss can last up to a six month period, so don’t despair if yours is lasting longer than a few weeks!

Unfortunately, there is no cure for hair loss after pregnancy.  Unlike normal hair loss, none of the supposed helpful products will work on your hair, either.  Like pregnancy, you will just have to tough it out for a few months and then it will be over!  Luckily, the hair loss after pregnancy is usually not permanent and it will grow back. However, in some cases bald spots are left behind that never fully recover.  This is generally not the case and your hair will return to its usual state within a few months, if not sooner.  In the meantime, you can continue to colour and cut your hair as you normally would.  These processes will not affect the hair loss in any way.

If your hair loss after pregnancy is severe, you may want to check with your doctor.  Hypothyroidism can be commonly diagnosed post partum and hair loss is a symptom that runs rampant among women.  In addition to hair loss, other symptoms may include fatigue, inability to lose weight, hoarseness, depression and weight gain.  Again, these symptoms are quite common among women that are within months of just having a child, so the hair loss after pregnancy is most likely caused simply by the pregnancy itself.  However, if you are concerned contact your doctor to express your questions and possibly have some tests run to ease your mind.

BALANCED HORMONES = GREAT HAIR

Hormones play a crucial role in the hair growth process. There are a number of hormones governing hair growth in men and women. This is where the significance of high hormone supplements originates.
Testosterone and Estrogen are two examples of hormones governing human hair growth. Testosterone governs beard, body hair and armpit among men. Estrogen prevents hair growth on the chin among women.  It also preserves frontal hair. Disturbance in estrogen level causes hair loss and balding among women. 

Warning - we’re about to get a bit technical but stay with us until the end, it’ll be worth it.

Some other examples of hormones regulating hair growth are as follows –
  • Human Growth Hormone (HGH)
  • Di Hydro Epi Androsterone (DHEA)
  • Melatonin the sleep hormone, the natural progesterone, the natural bromelein.  

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) –
It is secreted by the pituitary gland. It reaches its peak level during adolescence. And then it starts decreasing. Humans produce 500 mg of growth hormone at the age of 20. It comes down to 200 mg at the age of 40. And it is a paltry 25 mg at 80. Post-adolescence, one can use HGH supplement for various purposes including healthy hair. You may take natural hormone replacement pills or synthroids. But you must be careful about general health and nutrient intake. 

Di Hydro Epi Androsterone (DHEA) –
This steroid is found abundantly in the body. Improper intake of this highly potent hormone can cause male pattern baldness beside increasing facial hair growth. Over the counter hormonal supplements like androstenedione, pregnenolone and DHEA can cause hair thinning. Rather one should use FDA approved treatments like Rogaine and Propecia. Avodart and Nizoral also come in the list of high hormone supplements.

Melatonin –
It increases anagen hair rate in women with pattern baldness. It plays a key role in hair growth. Some hormones secreted from pituitary and thyroid glands have a significant impact on hair growth.  

Dietary and Vitamin supplements
Various dietary and vitamin supplements also play determinative roles in hair growth. And they form core parts of the overall modern hair care mechanism.  

One should also be careful about diet for healthy hair. The present day busy lifestyle demands more dietary supplements on a daily basis. A proper diet intake will go a long way in supporting healthy hair growth. 
The elements that an ideal diet for healthy hair should contain include –
  • Pantothemic Acid 
  • L-Cystine 
  • Vitamin C 
  • Folic acid 
  • Vanadium 
  • Chromium 
  • Molybdenum 
  • Zinc Picolinate 
  • Iron 
  • Copper 
Sometimes the dietary supplements contain stress vitamins and energy releasers. They are present in addition to the vital components.

  • Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) - It is an antioxidant water-soluble vitamin needed for proper and healthy hair growth. 
  • L-cysteine and l-tyrosine – They are the basic amino acids in human hair. L-cysteine comprises up to 14 per cent of the hair.  It is available in chicken and aged grains. 
  • Vitamin C – Deficiency of this water-soluble nutrient stops the flow of nutrients to the hair follicles. Its deficiency also causes hair tangling and breaking. The sources of Vitamin C include citrus fruits, green vegetables, tomatoes and potatoes. 
  • Folic acid (vitamin B9) – It prevents thinning and greying of hair. It is found in cereals, lentils, asparagus, spinach, black beans, peanuts, orange, enriched breads, romaine lettuce and broccoli. 
  • Vanadium, molybdenum, chromium, zinc picolinate, iron and copper are important minerals for restoration and growth of hair. 

Hair loss vitamin supplement may also helpful in getting a healthy hair but shouldn’t be a replacement for a balanced diet. These supplements are no less effective than hair growth shampoos or conditioners. Vitamins supplementing hair growth include –
  • Vitamin A - Its role in cell division, differentiation and immune regulation makes it crucial in hair growth phases. Retinol is the most usable form of this vitamin. Its source lies in eggs, liver, whole milk and fortified foods like fat-reduced milk, cereals and breads. 
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) – Thiamin is available in meat, whole grains, cereals, pasta, dried beans, nuts, blackstrap molasses, rice, brewer’s yeast, bran and wheat germ. 
  • Vitamin B12 – Its deficiency leads to malnutrition and deterioration of hair health. It is found in dairy products, eggs, meat, poultry and fish. 
  • Niacin (Vitamin B3) – The sources of Vitamin B3 include most high-protein foods like beef, chicken and turkey, tuna and other fatty fish like salmon and swordfish, pork, brewer’s yeast, beets, milk, peanuts and sunflower seeds. 
  • Vitamin B-6 – The foods offering Vitamin B-6 include beef liver, lentils, chicken, turkey, shrimp, salmon, tuna, soybeans, nuts, brown rice, carrots, sunflowers seeds, wheat germ, avocados, peanut butter, pork, whole grains, bananas and many vegetables. 
  • Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) – They are found in dark green leafy vegetables, asparagus, beans, kelp, soybeans and soy flour. Other sources include oranges, strawberries, rice, brewer’s yeast, beef and liver. 
  • Vitamin C - Red and green peppers, leafy greens like beet tops, turnip greens and spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, potatoes brussels sprouts, squash, cauliflower and cabbage have rich supply of Vitamin C. Fruits like pineapple, oranges, watermelon, papaya, kiwi, mango, cantaloupe, raspberries, cranberries and blueberries are good source of Vitamin C. 
  • Vitamin D – This Vitamin is available in fortified milk and cereals, cod liver oil, egg yolks, liver, and fatty fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines and herring. 
  • Vitamin E – Vitamin E is found in wheat germ, peanuts, vegetable oils like corn, soybean and safflower, almonds, walnuts, meat, dairy products, fruits and green leafy vegetables like spinach. Many of its natural sources are rich in fats. And that makes it an effective hair growth supplement. 
  • Vitamin H – Its sources include egg yolks, rice, soy products, cauliflower, oatmeal, barley, whole wheat, milk, cereals, almonds, beef liver, peanuts and brewer’s yeast. 
  • Vitamin K – Vitamin K is found in collard greens, apples, avocados, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, olive oil, cauliflower, dark green lettuce, oranges, peas, potatoes, soybeans, etc.

STRESS IS CAUSING YOU HAIR LOSS

“ My hair is falling, doctor, there’s hair on the bed, there’s hair on the comb, there’s hair everywhere, except on my head”- This may sound humorous. But it is true. The main cause for hair loss is stress. 

Stress and hair loss are interrelated. This is commonly noticed among people who gulp down coffee for breakfast, swallow the burgers for lunch and puff the ciggies to kill the stress.

Most people are under severe stress because of an overdose of work. Stress and hair loss are the important factors that cause premature greying. Your hair is the first part, which shows that you are in severe stress. Medication, imbalances in nutrition, and illness are the factors which cause stress and hair loss.

The desire to earn and work pressure are the two main troubles causing stress and hair loss.

Lack of exercise, hectic work schedules and most people are running from one place to another. Working women are facing more stress from both home and job. Stress at home and at the work place have a drastic effect on food habits. Very often a lack of vitamins and thus hair loss is a result of wrong food habits. 
Sometimes if you have undergone surgery for any ailment, your mind and body both are under severe stress and finally you may suffer from hair loss. This condition can be corrected automatically. So don’t panic because stress and hair loss are inter-oven elements.

When the human body experiences stress there are a number of hormones that are produced and the number one that we are covering her is Cortisol.

WHAT IS DANDRUFF & WHY DO WE HAVE IT?

​Dandruff is one of the most common scalp problems. But it is surprising that no precise cause of dandruff is known. There is therefore no cure for dandruff, but you can treat it whenever it shows. There are many factors that trigger dandruff and some speculation about the possible causes. Let us talk about them so that we can keep our scalp squeaky clean from dandruff.

Dandruff and fungus-
Dandruff is a kind of Seborrheic Dermatitis and it is believed that dandruff is caused by a fungus that normally lives on the human skin and feeds on skin oils. During dandruff this fungus known as Malassezia multiplies manifold and creates problems in the scalp. Why a fungus, which otherwise lies dormant, suddenly flares up and multiplies is not precisely known.
Dandruff and other causes-
Other causes that are held responsible for dandruff are:
  • Stress
  • Poor hygiene of scalp
  • Over use of shampoos
  • Under use of shampoo
  • Chemical treatments that harm the hair and scalp etc.
  • Dry Scalp
  • Oily Scalp
  • Yeast overgrowth
  •  The incidence of dandruff is less in summer than in winter. We can deduce that less sun may be causing dandruff, but exposing more to sun may cause serious skin problems.

DANDRUFF, IS IT REALLY!?

Everybody hates dandruff. Nobody likes the falling white flakes and the itching scalp. We've all tried many shampoos and treatments, both natural and chemical to get rid of dandruff.

I want to ask you - are you sure that you have dandruff?

Unless a doctor diagnosed it as dandruff, how can you be sure that you're suffering dandruff if it is not clearing after many washes? Maybe you are suffering from something else?

Let us look at the other problems that may cause you the same symptoms.

Dandruff and other scalp problems-
There are many scalp problems that itch and produce scales and white flakes.
  • Psoriasis is one of the tough ones. Unless you get it diagnosed and get treated it will not go away.
  • Many cosmetic applications may cause allergic dermatitis or irritant contact dermatitis.
  • Atopic dermatitis or commonly called eczema can also appear on the scalp.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis is one of the common scalp problems that mimic dandruff.

So what is dandruff?
In dandruff what we see as white flakes are skin cells. Our skin regenerates itself every month. The new cells travel from the bottom of the skin layer to the top in a month and the dead cells are shed. These are so microscopic and small in quantity that we don't notice this shedding of cells. In dandruff this shedding increases. That is how these dead cells with skin oils form white flakes and we can see them.

Other things to try-
  • Daily scalp brushing to remove flaking, and stimulate blood flow to the scalp and oil glands
  • Scalp scrub or exfoliator, we use them on the rest of our body, what should our scalp be any different?!
  • Using shampoos, conditioners, and other products with a low fragrance, it's very common for fragrances to irritate the scalp.
  • Haircare products that contain Methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone may result in an itchy, flaky scalp too. Using products without these ingredients may help
  • DO NOT go to bed with wet hair! Going to bed with wet hair traps water between your pillow and your scalp, with very little airflow, for a long period of time, and as a result, bacteria starts to form on the scalp, being a dark, moist area, which can also result in an itchy scalp.

Dandruff and diagnosis-
If you are not able to get rid of dandruff after trying many formulas, it is time that you visit a doctor and get the proper diagnosis. Once you are sure that it is dandruff, you can take proper measures and get scalp relief.
